There is no reason to throw out items that you can reuse. Sometimes, you just have to get creative and reuse household items! There are countless ways to reuse some of our everyday items to extend their life and save you big bucks in the process.
One of my favorite things to do with the kids is to make magnets out of bottle caps. We pick up magnets for super cheap on Ebay, Amazon or our local store and then we get creative on a rainy day or when they are “bored”. Old Cd’s also make super cute magnets and their imaginations are put to work as well. We use a hot glue gun to glue the magnets on the back of the bottle cap or CD then decorate with scrap booking paper, paint, markers or embellishments.
Have an old garden hose that has a hole or two in it?? Seal off one end of it with cement, melted plastic or glue then continue making more holes in the rest of the garden house. You now have a soaker hose you can use in the garden or flower beds. Or you can leave the other end open and let the kids play in their new “sprinkler” in the dog days of summer.
Another use for old CD”S is making your own drink coasters. I let the kids decorate them, cover them with polyurethane and put a piece of felt on the back. You can paint over them then laminate them. You can melt the surface of the CD to create unique textures. You could sand the surface of the CD in uneven shapes to create an interesting effect. This could be a super cute Father’s Day craft as well if you added pictures to the CD!!
Glass bottles make the perfect lamp! Just order online a small light that can be inserted into the bottle. Thread it in, then turn it on. You can also paint the bottle, use material on it or countless other things to make it creative.
Did you know that you can send Nike your old shoes and they’ll turn them into a playground? They’ll literally take your old shoes and melt them down in a safe way, then use the plastic to build playgrounds.
These are a few fun and creative ways you can reuse household items. Unlike buying a lamp or a soaker hose, you’ll get to look at these items and know that YOU made them. You get to express your creativity while feeling the pride that comes with making something new.
