We have already done a few articles about the importance of teaching our children the value of money. When it comes to saving money, I am not sure where the ‘pig’ came in, but the piggy bank has been around as long as I can remember. The other day, I happened upon this awesome Money Savvy Pig. It is unique in that it has four slots for inserting money: a Save, Spend, Donate, and Invest slot. It is used as an interactive tool for teaching children money management.
Each bank comes with eye stickers (piggy has to have eyes!), goal-setting stickers and a guide on how to get started.
Each chamber empties separately on the bottom of the bank. This makes it super easy to empty the individual chambers as needed.
The whole concept puts a new twist on the common piggy bank we all know and love. And, to say the least, I was intrigued! When I received the chance to review one of them, I grabbed it! I knew it would be perfect for my grandbaby Kailey!
In teaching our children about spending and saving money, we all have different methods. I remember having a piggy bank as a child and when my children were small, they had a piggy bank. They put their money into it until it built up, then they were allowed to spend it on something they had been wanting. This helped them learn the general idea of saving up for an item before buying it.
These days, money management has became a lot more complicated. Even adults fall victim to money management issues these days. Rainy days happen far to often and some don’t have a nest egg to depend on! So, it is extremely important for our children’s future to teach them the skills needed for later in life.
With all that said, children learn quicker with hands on experience. Who doesn’t?! I mean can you imagine sitting a 4 or 5 year old down and talking about save, spend, donate, and invest? Somehow, I think that would go straight over their head and they would be counting imaginary somethings in the air by then. That is where Money Savvy Pig comes in!
Of course at age 4, Kailey, doesn’t understand any of it to be honest with you. BUT, again, by starting now and letting her actually do it, and see it in action, she will learn. It will set the foundation for years ahead. Kailey has the green piggy bank and was excited to set it up! She studied her stickers, while we talked about what each one meant.
After a bit of thought, she chose the stickers she wanted. By allowing her to choose her own stickers, it gave her a sense that it really was her choices.
We allowed her to pull off her stickers and apply them to the piggy bank. We let her choose them. She chose a bike to save up for, as she is wanting a new bike! She chose a globe for her donations, a graduation hat for investing, and a fish bowl for spending. We don’t really know why the fish bowl on spending because she has never mentioned a fish? But, that was her choice.
She had her stickers on and was really proud of her new Money Savvy Pig! She was set to go! But wait! Her piggy was hungry! She said his belly was empty and she needed to feed him some money!!!
She loves putting money into the different bellies of her pig.
Even though she doesn’t really understand yet, she does a really good job of spreading her money out.
She loves her new Money Savvy Pig! WE love her new Money Savvy Pig!!! This will help teach her, with a hands on experience, the necessary skills that she will need in a fun way! As children, they are like sponges gathering information, so grab this opportunity to teach them about money.
As Kailey gets older, she will begin to understand more of what the different ‘bellies’ are. But, for now, this is a start of managing her money that will last throughout her entire life. I can honestly say this is one amazing product, that used appropriately and with parental guidance to help them learn, will set the path for a firm background in money management! I would highly recommend it for anyone with kids!
