More and more you are hearing commercials on the radio about being prepared for natural disasters and how you never know what day is going to be the day before one. Living in the heart of tornado alley, we aren’t strangers to bad weather and losing power. In an emergency, aside from clean water, food and shelter, one of the most critical things needed is information. If it’s a short term or local power outage, your cell phone might see you through, but what if the cell towers go down as well? This is where the Dynamo Radio Lantern comes in.
The Dynamo Radio Lantern is a LED Light and Radio combination that can be charged through a 6v wall adapter, but also has a built in hand crank dynamo that can charge the battery as well. Three minutes of cranking gets you about 2-8 minutes of cell talk time or 10-20 minutes of radio or light time, so it’s best to save it for important communications. But, those minutes are a Godsend when you have no power!
The unit itself is fairly well built, compact package, designed with camping or storage in an emergency kit in mind. It’s roughly 10 inches long and about 4 inches across at the top, weighing in at about 2 pounds. It will probably withstand the normal rough use of camping or being dropped on dirt, but I wouldn’t push my luck by dropping it on a hard surface or trying to use it under water.
The Dynamo Radio Lantern radio works well. Although it doesn’t pick up weak or distant stations well, it did an amazing job at picking up our local and close stations. The speaker is clear and fairly loud, which makes it nice. The LED light shines brightly, with a faint blue tinge, easily illuminating a medium sized room or large tent.
After realizing that the LED wouldn’t be an effective light source for long term outages, I found 30 hour emergency candles that fit the bill pretty nicely. In the past we have burned through multiple small candles during a power outage! If you have two to three days and no power, those small candles start adding up in dollars! The 30 hour emergency candles lasted! Actually, they are still going! They burn great and give a warm comforting light. In a pinch, they can be used as a mini stove to heat water or food. They are candles though, so you have to be careful on where they are placed and make sure you have adequate ventilation. They are made of a plastic material, so if dropped you don’t have to worry about them breaking. They also come with a little cap to seal off the wick when not in use.
All in all, the Dynamo Radio lantern is a solid piece of equipment that is vitally important to have in any emergency kit. With the kind of storms we have here, the Dynamo Radio Lantern and the 30 hour emergency candles are a welcome addition to our emergency kit! And, if you are a camper, both of these items would be amazing to have in your camping supplies also!
