There is an ornamental grass that will fit into every type of garden and every landscape. Showy ornamental grasses come in many shapes, sizes and textures, so it is just up to you to add the right plant to the space that you have available to you. If you like having year round interest in your garden, this is a great way to make sure that there is always something to look at, like movement and texture in the seed heads that so many varieties of grass produce.
Try these showy ornamental grasses in your garden for all the different spaces and areas that need a dominating plant in place. You can see how I used an ornamental grass in a drought tolerant flower bed with an Autumn Sedum for a contrasting look.
Showy Ornamental Grasses
Silberfeder is an ornamental grass that seems to sparkle and shimmer in the sunlight with wispy white featherheads on top of grass stems that turn a bright gold as autumn approaches. Plant this grass if you want something that has dramatic fall plumes that will stand and stay upright well into winter. This variety is great planted en masse towards the back of your front facing garden, or in the center of an all around view garden.
For something that is truly interesting and different, try Zebra Grass, which is actually striped along the blades of each leaf. This grass choice does well in a wide variety of hardiness zones, 4-9, and keeps its striped appearance through summer till fall arrives. Because of its height it is also best planted en masse where it can best display its unique blades.
Fiber Optic Grass
This is a great, smaller grass that can also be added in potted containers and thrive in partial shade. If you want something that for those hard to grow areas, or to drape over the side of a gorgeous container, this is the plant for you. The grass is super thin, super light and resembles fiber optic threads.
