I love essential oils. I mean, I really am in love with them. I’m all about holistic treatments for both myself and even my pets. Essential oils are a key part of that. These oils are wonderful way to organically supplement modern medicine when a pill isn’t always warranted.
Essential Oils for Better Health
I want to start out by saying that there is definitely a place for modern medicine. There just is. There’s a reason that the average life span of past generations was so low. It’s because they didn’t have modern medicine. That being said, I believe that we overuse man-made drugs that have been so beneficial to us. Painkillers, antibiotics, weird medications for arthritis that have a laundry list of side effects – all of these are great when we use them when absolutely necessary, but I don’t believe in throwing pills at everything! There are many studies that back up this way of thinking. However, if I were to break my leg or arm, you can bet I will be in the emergency room and wanting help from modern medicine!
On the other hand, essential oils can potentially be used to treat a multitude of health problems from headaches, sinus troubles, arthritis, muscle pain, minor scrapes and abrasions and more. So, why would I take a pill when I can use something that’s all natural and has been shown to be free of side effects? I wouldn’t. The same holds true for my pets. Essential oils are just as great for a holistic approach to pet health as they are for humans.
I have waited to write up my thoughts on using essential oils, as I have been implementing each of these oils into our daily lives. I am going to be very honest and tell you that I went into this venture not really knowing what to expect. I had heard of essential oils and had heard others sing their praises. My thoughts were – can an essential oil really do all that? To be honest, I really had my doubts to say the least.
On the other hand, I am all about holistic treatments and am all for getting away from chemicals – this was my biggest draw to them. In the past, I have used herbs and other natural products, but had not ventured into the world of essential oils. When it comes to sickness, I suppose I am a product of modern times. Just like the next person, when I am sick, I am use to running to the doctor for a quick pill fix. Sometimes the pills work and sometimes they don’t. Y’all know the drill! If you’re not well in a few days, you end up back at the doctor’s office getting yet another pill fix. Sometimes, you even have to have another pill to alleviate side effects of the first pill! Plus, you are shelling out dollars each time you go! Ouch! Well, have you ever thought about what your grandparents or even their grandparents used when modern medicine wasn’t available?
Well, to make a long story short, they used what was available. From herbs to other plants, they were knowledgeable in what to use for different ailments. Today, modern medicine still depends a lot of these plants and oils!
Let’s check out the oils that I have been trying:
Lavender has been used for thousands of years for its calming and relaxing benefits. It also soothes occasional skin irritations, improves skin recovery, and eases muscle tension in the head and neck. I love using the lavender at night to help me sleep. I use it in the diffuser in the bedroom. Before I got my diffuser, I put a couple of drops on a cotton ball and rubbed my pillowcase with it. I also rubbed a bit on the bottom of my feet (a great place to rub the oil for absorption).
My family has had quite a few trying times in the past few weeks and lavender oil has been a go-to for us to help reduce stress, help us sleep and basically provide calm. Lavender is also pure heaven mixed in a warm bath before bedtime to help relax!
Lavender is also became one of my favorites to use in homemade body scrubs and lotions!
Lemon oil has multiple uses that include being a powerful aromatic and internal cleanser, an air cleanser which helps lift the spirits, and a non-toxic cleaner. Love, love, love the lemon essential oil especially as a cleanser. I mix a few drops with water and use as a cleanser for kitchen and bathroom counter tops. It’s a great natural cleanser and leaves a fresh scent!
Peppermint is another of the essential oils that has been used for thousands of years. It provides a wide range of health benefits including promoting healthy respiratory function and clear breathing, alleviation of stomach upset, as well as being used in toothpastes and chewing gum for oral health.
On top of those uses, peppermint oil is great for headaches. Just rub a bit on the back of your neck and/or forehead to help relieve the pain. I’m not saying it will get rid of all of them, but it does seem to help.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil is known for its cleansing and rejuvenation of the skin, promoting healthy immune function, and protection against environmental and seasonal allergic threats. I have to tell you this is my wonder oil!!! When I first received the oils, I was experiencing a nasty staph infection in one of my ears that had kept coming back time and time again. My ear was stopped up and draining yucky mess. I had even had surgery on my ear trying to clear the infection. Taking a leap of faith, I started using the melaleuca, rubbed behind and around the ear canal, along with oregano oil (which has antibiotic type properties) rubbed on the bottom of my feet. Within a couple of days, I was totally, totally, totally amazed! My ear had stopped draining and seemed to be healing up!
A fluke? Well, maybe, and yes I was still in doubt too! Except…it happened again. For whatever reason, this staph infection would not leave me alone. It came back. So, I started the process again of using the melaleuca and oregano oil. Again, it cleared up!
I have yet had to go back to the doctor! It was at this point my doubts were cleared and I realized the power of the essential oils! I became a true believer!
Oregano has a number of traditional and modern uses including use as a cleaning agent and promotion of healthy digestion and respiratory function. It’s also an excellent source of phenolic acids and flavonoids, powerful antioxidants, which are essential for good health. The oregano has powerful antibiotic properties and as I just said aided me in my ear infection!
One of the most ancient essential oils, Frankincense has many uses including helping to build and maintain a healthy immune system, promoting cellular health, and reducing the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
Muscle and Joint Pain Relief Blend
A blend of Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus to create a potent mixture that is great for occasional muscle pain and achy joints. This one is my hubs favorite! He walks on concrete all day at his job and suffers low back pain from it. He is not one for using medicines, or taking medications. Maybe that is a typical man thing, I don’t know. However, after talking him into trying the deep blue rubbed on his back one night, he actually asked for it again! He said it helped and I believe him. For him to ask for it again is all the proof required there!
A blend of Lemon, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Thyme, Melissa, and Cardamom essential oils an help cleanse and soothe airways. It can be used topically on the chest, back and the bottoms of feet. It has a wonderful calming aroma that makes it perfect for overnight diffusion. Used in the diffuser, it helps me breath at night and get a restful night sleep. I have also used it by rubbing a bit on my face and forehead where my sinuses are to aid in breathing when my nose has been severely stopped up.
Immune Boosting Blend
A blend of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils to promote a healthy immune system. Who wouldn’t love this oil?! I love using this one in the diffuser! On Guard helps protect against viruses by building the immune system. A healthy immune system is better able to fight off viruses and other antigens that comes it’s way. Why wait to get sick when you can ward it off?
Beyond using the essential oils for healthcare, pet healthcare, aromatherpy, cleaning, etc., we’re going to be making some fun homemade personal care products like body scrubs and butters plus different cleaning products. We even have plans to try our hand at making our own homemade laundry soap! Be sure and watch for the post as they go up!
