Little Lamb Soap Nuts: A Natural, Chemical Free Detergent #review

 

With so many different detergents on the market to choose from and even more harmful chemicals that go into each one, it’s time to be a little choosy. I am picky about what I’m washing my clothes with, which is why when I found Little Lamb Organic Natural Soap Nuts I knew I had found something I could wash my clothes in and feel confident in the fact that I wasn’t going to be wearing harmful chemicals, like carcinogenic agents, along with my clothing.

The idea of Soap Nuts as a laundry detergent was very intriguing to me! When I received a chance to try them out of course I said yes! Little Lamb’s sent me a 5 Kilo Bag of their Soap Nuts to see what I thought of them.

What exactly is a Soap Nut?

For starters, SoapNuts are not nuts. They are actually berries that grow on the Soap Berry Tree (Sapindus mukorossi). They ripen and after falling to the ground, they are collected and then dried naturally in the sun. Here’s the good part! They contain saponin, which is Mother Nature’s soap! When used in our laundry, the agitation in the water causes the soap to be released.

Soap Nuts contain no chemicals or toxins. They are 100% natural. Soap Nuts gets your clothes clean and fresh. And, because they contain no chemicals, Soap Nuts leaves your clothes unbelievably soft – all without fabric softener! The one thing Soap Nuts doesn’t claim is to get your laundry whiter and brighter because they contain no bleach or whiteners.

Soap Nuts are safe and wonderful for anyone with allergies. Soap Nuts do not contain chemicals or fragrances and are 100% natural and hypoallergenic. And, just in case you are wondering, they are safe for those with nut allergies because they are not a nut – they are a berries.

Let’s talk about recycling! Since Soap Nuts are 100% natural, you can re-use the used water from the washing machine for your garden and plants! Of course, you would need a collection system to catch it, but this is awesome for saving on the water bill! If you’re like me, summer water bills with a garden to water can be sticker shock! Going one step further, when the Soap Nuts are used up (usually after 4-6 washes), they can be put into the compost bin, worm farm or scattered over your garden. They are 100% biodegradable and great for your garden!

What did I think?

To be honest, when I opened my Soap Nuts, I was a little alarmed because they smelled like vinegar. I surely didn’t want my clothes to come out smelling like that. However, I went ahead and loaded my laundry into the washing machine. The instructions said to use 4-6 Soap Nuts. I decided to split the difference and try 5 of the Soap Nuts to the bag (which comes with the Soap Nuts). Then, just turn on the water and watch the little guys do their thing. When placed in the water these little Soap Nuts are activated and release the natural soap.

I took a peek into the washing machine and I couldn’t see any suds. I went back to re-read the instructions because I thought I did something wrong. As it turns out, this is normal. Soap Nuts are low sudsing. On other detergents, it is the chemicals that are creating the suds and since Soap Nuts has no chemicals it makes perfect sense! So, in other words, don’t be alarmed if you don’t see suds.

When my laundry was finished washing, I threw them in the dryer and waited. When finished drying, I was anxious to check it out. All my clothes came out clean, fresh and soft! There was no vinegar smell to them at all. Actually no smell except freshness. If you like fragrance in your laundry detergent, you can still be natural by add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the Soap Nut wash bag. You will have a nice fragrance and still be chemical free and natural!
