I have had several people ask me if you can cook a whole chicken in a slow cooker. Well, yes you can AND it is a delicious chicken recipe! If it will fit, it will cook! Not only will it cook, it will be nice and juicy! This Slow Cooker Whole Chicken recipe is so juicy and tender that the meat will literally will fall off the bone! If you prefer a little browning, for a more baked appearance, just pop it in the broiler for a few minutes. Serve with a couple of sides for an easy meal! Don’t be surprised when your family ask for seconds of this delicious and juicy chicken!
Slow Cooker Whole Chicken Recipe
Ingredients:
1 whole chicken – make sure it will fit in your slow cooker
1 onion
2 tbsp butter
Herbs and seasonings of choice
For herbs I use salt, pepper, garlic powder or paste, oregano, basil, and thyme.
Instructions:
Wash the chicken and remove any spare parts from the inside (some have them and some do not). Pat the chicken dry using paper towel.
Rub a generous amount of butter between the skin and the meat.
Mix all of the spices together. Rub the spices between the skin and meat as well. Sprinkle any remaining spice over top of the chicken.
Slice the onion into thick pieces and place in the bottom of the slow cooker.
Sit the chicken in on top of the onion slices. It is not necessary to add any water or liquid.
Cover the slow cooker and cook for 6-8 hours or until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.
When you remove the chicken from the slow cooker you’ll find it is so juicy and tender and will be falling off the bone!
I like to place the chicken on a baking sheet and broil for a few minutes to crisp and brown the skin.
Quite a bit of juice will cook out of the chicken and leave a stock in the bottom of the slow cooker that is perfect for turning into a gravy!
Enjoy!

I love to bake a whole chicken and use it for several meals. But to bake one in this summer heat is crazy. The oven makes the kitchen unbearably hot. So I like to use my crock pot as much as possible. Had no idea such a beautiful chicken could be make with one! Thank so much, I will make this asap.

Can you do this starting with a frozen chicken or does it need to be thawed first?
I have only ever used a thawed chicken.
