5 Tips Which Will Help You Survive in the Wild

Finding yourself in the wild, especially if you are on your own, can be an extremely frightening experience. This is particularly true if you don’t have basic survival skills that allow you to deal with troublesome situations in the best possible way. Good preparation, both physical and mental, is better than any tool you can get. Therefore, here are five useful tips that will help you survive in the wild.

5 Tips Which Will Help You Survive in the Wild

5 Tips Which Will Help You Survive in the Wild

1. Think About All Possible Options

Smart planning and quick thinking are essential for your survival. Decide on the best possible actions as soon as possible. If you choose to seek out help in civilization – do it right away. Don’t wait for three or four days before you make a final decision, because you will easily lose your strength and endurance by doing some other things that are not relevant. Take action on the first or second day if that is possible, while you are still able to think straight.

2. Prepare A Shelter

You should keep in mind that cold and wind are not your main concerns –getting off the ground and keeping yourself dry are. Bamboo is probably the best possible material for shelter building – it is very strong and hollow, plus the fact that you can easily work with it, since it can be flattened if necessary. You should go for a reasonably comfortable shelter that is constructed as fast and efficiently as possible – particularly in the case of emergency. You can also consider a lean-to, where a log or a large rock is required, in order to lay long branches against it. Then criss-cross smaller branches and shrubbery on top to provide necessary insulation.

3. Build a Fire and Stay Warm

Building a traditional wood fire requires three types of materials. The first one is tinder, and it consists of small materials that have to be light, dry and as finely shredded as possible. The second one is kindling, including medium-sized materials that will quickly catch flame from the tinder. These are small twigs, dry leaves and sticks. The last one is fuel – dry wood logs that will keep the fire going once it has caught flame from the kindling. There are several methods of building a fire in the wild, the most popular being tepee method. Start with a pile of tinder, and lean kindling sticks against the pile, with the tips pointed to the centre. Add progressively larger sticks until you reach the small fuel size.

4. Find Something to Eat

This may be the trickiest part of your survival in the wild. Depending on your skill set and the animals that can be found in that particular area, you will have to decide on the best way to find something to eat. Bear, turkey and deer can be taken with a bow, whereas you can use traps and snares for smaller animals such as rabbits. Of course, you cannot compare yourself to Bear Grylls, the pioneer of the survival in the wild, since he had a professional cameraman in his team. This is exactly why carrying wildlife camera carrying wildlife camera should be your go-to option – it will help you to easily detect animals around you.

5. Find Safe Drinking Water

Even clear running water can have a variety of heavy metals and microorganisms. This is exactly why you should treat all water as contaminated. There are many methods appropriate for purifying it, and some of these include the following: filtration in the first place, in order to remove small and large debris and sediments. Using activated charcoal or bone char will remove heavy metals and toxins, and boiling the water will get rid of bacteria and other microorganisms.

These five tips are essential, and you should have them in mind whenever you find yourself in a dead-end situation in the wild. Besides that, it is always a good idea to test and retest your wilderness and camping skills, in order to see which ones are working for you. There are numerous deadly mistakes that can occur, and you should do your best to prevent them by practicing the safer ways of doing certain actions.
