Home Maintenance Tasks to Keep You and Your Family Safe

One of the most exciting parts of becoming a homeowner is settling into the new life in a new home with your family. Everything feels fresh and new. Eventually, the family finds their groove in the new home and outside of keeping a regular cleaning schedule, home maintenance is easily forgotten. Be careful not to fall into such a dangerous trap. There are certain home maintenance tasks that are important to keep up with. Without a routine checkup, issues might appear that can put the family’s health and safety in great danger. While there are plenty of tasks to remember, there are a few that must make the top of the list.

Checking Alarms
Make sure to routinely check on the alarms in the house. According to FEMA, it is wise to test smoke detectors once a month (at the very least). Allstate Insurance also recommends changing the batteries twice a year. The best way they encourage people to remember is by using the daylight savings change as a cue to routinely change the batteries. It is also important to check for the security alarm to make sure it works as well. This might involve the professionals from the security company, but it is an important appointment to make.

Watching for Water Damage
Safeguard the family from any potential water damage, mold or mildew growth by checking for leaks. Check the ceilings, corners, floorboards, and walls to see if any water collects in these places. If there’s ever a wet spot in any of these areas, this is usually a sign that there’s a leak somewhere inside the house that requires a closer look. Make sure any leaks are patched up as quickly as possible with help from a professional at A Absolute Plumbing & Heating.

Breathing Clean Air
Proper ventilation is crucial for areas like the kitchen and the bathroom. When these areas don’t receive proper ventilation, it pollutes the air in the entire house. Double check to make sure the pipes where the air flows isn’t clogged or blocked up.

Keeping an Eye on Trees
Tree trimming is essential if tall trees surround the house. Tall trees are beautiful, but they can be a hazard if the branches fall on the house or a nearby utility cord and start an electrical fire. Keep an eye out for branches and tree limbs that can be potentially dangerous.

Patrolling the Pests
In order to make sure the house doesn’t get infested with termites, rodents, and other gross critters, seal cracks to the doors and windows leading to the outside. Keep an eye on the gutters and pipes in areas like the laundry room and bathrooms. Sometimes, pests can crawl through the pipes, end up indoors and quietly destroy a home.

These tips make up a good starting point for any homeowner that’s looking to keep their family safe. The dangers of home neglect are far too great. Besides, the protection of family and the home are worth the extra effort.

Good tips! Also changing filters on furnaces and keeping things away from central air. One of the leading causes f house fires is also dryer venting- make sure the vents dont get clogged!
