Secrets to Get Your Family Room in Livable Condition Again

It can happen to the best of us; a once clean and organized living room that was an oasis from the stressors and chaos of everyday life, has become a messy den of noise, clutter, and confusion. Having kids can make a family room feel like a playhouse, and it’s natural to get so flustered that you give up altogether and seek out another hiding place. But don’t worry – reclaiming your family room and making it a space everyone can enjoy both individually and together isn’t as hard as you think. It’s time to take on this mission impossible with these super easy secrets to getting your family room back in order.

Secrets to Get Your Family Room in Livable Condition Again

Secrets to Get Your Family Room in Livable Condition Again

Start Cleaning

Whether it’s toys on the floor, clothes on the furniture, or plates and stacks of unopened mail and magazines on the coffee table, start transforming your space by doing a clean sweep and removing any and all objects that have no place in a living room. Hiring a McMaid or other cleaning service to come by once a week is a good way of ensuring your hard efforts won’t go to waste as time goes on.

Get Expandable Seating

A leather loveseat and armchair may have worked back when it was just the two of you, but a good family room needs to be able to adapt to the many situations life throws at you. Whether it’s movie night, an unexpected house guest, or an impromptu sleepover, having furniture that is large enough to seat all the members of your family comfortably is crucial to making the space feel open and inclusive. You might also consider a couch that can turn into a bed when you need an extra bed space.

Get Organized with Disguising Furniture

You don’t need unseemly plastic bins and boxes all over the place. There are plenty of furniture options that allow you to keep your family room looking adult, while still giving the kids plenty of space to keep their things. An ottoman with a removable top is perfect for storing toys after playtime, and the drawers of an entertainment center can hold all sorts of odds and ends you want accessible, but not constantly on display. Make sure to pick up a sofa organizer that drapes over the arm of the furniture – it will keep your remotes all in one place, and usually has extra slots for other knick-knacks and magazines.

These easy secrets are just the beginning. Using strategic furniture placement to designate a play area, getting a wall-mounted TV in place of a bulkier floor model, and other organization tips can all contribute to a more livable family room. The most important thing to keep in mind when implementing these steps is to make sure everyone in the family plays their part in keeping the space clean, that way everyone can enjoy the space whether they’re together or relaxing solo.

Ah, I remember the days when I was working and making enough money to have a maid service come in once a month.
