Six Quick Fixes to Keep Your Kitchen in Working Order

In many ways, the kitchen is the beating heart every functional household revolves around. Keeping it in good working order makes life a lot easier and more enjoyable for everyone. An unorganized or disfucntional kitchen makes daily life a chore. Here are a few common problems that plague every kitchen, as well as some quick fixes to make them go away.

Six Quick Fixes to Keep Your Kitchen in Working Order

Six Quick Fixes to Keep Your Kitchen in Working Order

Perpetually Leaky Faucets
While faucets leak for a variety of reasons, the usual culprit is faulty compression seals. You don’t need to buy a new faucet to correct the problem. Just get a new set of rubber washers specific to your faucet, replace them correctly and you’re all set. It’s an easy DIY fix that will keep your house a lot more efficient in the long run.

Dishwashers That Don’t Work
Over time, the internal components of a good dishwasher accumulate grime that impede the normal functioning of the entire unit. Before looking for a replacement, take time to clean off the valve screen, float switch, and spray arm with some detergent and elbow grease. You can also save money on a completely new appliance by finding repair parts at places like Automatic Appliance.

Malfunctioning Refrigerators
Most older refrigerators malfunction due to overworked back-end coils. Pull your unit out from the wall and wipe away debris from the coils to see if that makes a difference. If door seals look iffy, replace them with original parts and check for leaks with an IR heat detector.

Sticky Drawers and Cabinets
Lousy doors and cabinets make cooking a nightmare, even for those that aren’t gourmets. If a track-based drawer or cabinet isn’t sliding right, use WD-40 to grease the skids. If that doesn’t work, identify the obstruction and correct it by sanding wood or installing new tracks.

Soggy Drywall & Flaking Paint
Water is all around in any kitchen, especially in the sink area. Adding a nice backsplash behind the main sink will prevent crumbling drywall and paint. The good news is that an affordable high-quality backsplash can be screwed into the wall without having to lay individual tiles.

Warped or Cracked Floors
Wood and vinyl floors will suffer if they’re constantly inundated with water. You can prevent this outcome in a day or so by coating them with a waterproof sealer. Just roll it on, let it cure, and make floor material warping a problem of the past.

By now, it should be obvious that many kitchen problems can be solved with relatively quick fixes. Sometimes, more involved fixes are the superior option. When in doubt, consult a kitchen contractor to advise you on the best course of action for a stellar outcome.
